Our mission

At the STREAM lab of the Department of Surgery at Maastricht University, we are committed to bridging the gap between clinical practice and scientific discovery.

Every day, challenges encountered in patient care inspire new research questions, which our team investigates using patient-derived samples and innovative intraoperative techniques. This dynamic exchange between the clinic and the laboratory ensures that our research remains relevant and impactful, with the ultimate goal of enhancing patient outcomes.

Through our ongoing commitment to translational research, we aim to transform scientific discoveries into real-world solutions for patients. On this website, you can explore our research initiatives and join us in our mission to advance the future of surgical care. More about STREAMLab

Why STREAMLab?

Situated in the Maastricht University Medical Center, the STREAMLab draws inspiration from the ever-flowing Maas river - a vibrant stream that not only shapes the landscape but also unites countries across the Euregio.

Much like the Maas, our lab is a meeting point for diverse minds and disciplines, fostering cross-border collaboration and innovation in surgical translational and experimental research. STREAM stands for more than just water; it embodies the continuous flow of ideas, knowledge, and discovery that defines our work. Just as a stream adapts, carves new paths, and brings life wherever it goes, our lab thrives on dynamism, adaptability, and the relentless pursuit of progress. Here, curiosity and creativity converge, propelling biomedical research forward and ensuring that, like a true stream, we are always moving, always evolving, and always connecting.

In the STREAMLab, we don’t just follow the current: we create new channels for scientific exploration, bridging gaps between disciplines, cultures, and countries, and making waves that extend far beyond Maastricht

Our approach
Our research is the result of a true team effort where input from surgeons, oncologists, nurse practitioners, basic researchers, laboratory technicians, and PhD students is integrated in translational studies with a close eye on ultimate clinical benefit for patients.
